SENATE BILL 783 / HOUSE BILL 1029
The Maryland Association of Naturopathic Physicians (MDANP) has been hard at work preparing a strong bill to license naturopathic doctors (NDs) in the State of Maryland. During the interim period between legislative sessions, the MDANP participated in a work group with other health professions to discuss implications of naturopathic licensure and concerns regarding scope of practice. In January 2013, the MDANP introduced a bill that reflected important compromises which will still protect the integrity of the naturopathic profession while also taking into account concerns raised by other healthcare groups. We are very excited about the bill, and hope you will aid us in our efforts to bring licensed, regulated naturopathic medicine to our state!
Here’s what the bill will do:
- License naturopathic doctors under the Maryland Board of Physicians and create a Naturopathic Advisory Council to recommend regulations to the Board.
- Create a position on the Board of Physicians to be occupied by a naturopathic doctor.
- Define the scope of practice for naturopathic doctors in Maryland to include the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of disease using natural therapies, counseling and physical medicine (including soft tissue and joint mobilization).
- Create a workgroup to determine the development of a future naturopathic formulary in the state, including natural substances as well as some pharmaceutical drugs.
